Multilingual Websites in Dubai: Structure, SEO and Conversion

How to plan language URLs, translation, hreflang and conversion paths for an English, Arabic or Russian website serving Dubai.

01

Select languages from customer demand

Dubai businesses often serve audiences with different languages, but adding every possible translation creates maintenance risk. Start with sales conversations, search demand, support capacity and the languages in which the business can genuinely respond.

A language version should cover the full decision path: service explanation, proof, price context where appropriate, forms, validation messages, legal information and the follow-up channel.

02

Use stable URLs for every language

Search engines need a distinct URL for each indexable version. Common structures include subdirectories, subdomains or separate country domains. The best choice depends on ownership, market strategy and the ability to maintain each site.

Do not switch essential content only through a cookie or browser setting while keeping one URL. Avoid automatic redirects that prevent people or crawlers from choosing another language.

  • Keep a consistent URL convention across all templates.
  • Use self-referencing canonicals on genuine language versions.
  • Add hreflang only after the reciprocal final URLs exist and return indexable pages.
03

Localise the offer and interface

Literal translation can preserve grammar and still lose the sale. Currency, measurement, service terminology, contact expectations and examples need local review. Arabic also requires right-to-left layout testing rather than mirrored text inside an unchanged interface.

Keep brand claims consistent across languages. If a case, testimonial or price is unavailable in one market, do not fill the gap with invented material.

04

Prevent duplicate and conflicting signals

Every language page should declare its own language and canonical URL. Hreflang connects alternates; it does not replace canonicalisation, make a blocked page indexable or repair a weak translation.

Check sitemap entries, internal language links, redirects and error pages. A language selector that points all visitors back to the homepage creates friction and makes page relationships harder to understand.

05

Measure each market separately

Segment search performance, paid traffic and enquiries by landing-page language. A smaller language version may produce fewer visits but a stronger qualified-enquiry rate. That decision cannot be made from total traffic alone.

Assign ownership for translation updates. When English service terms change, the other versions need a defined review and release process rather than slowly drifting out of date.

Questions

Useful answers before the next step.

Should language versions use separate domains?

They can, especially when markets and operations are genuinely separate. Subdirectories are often simpler. The right choice depends on ownership, authority, localisation depth and maintenance.

Does hreflang translate a page or improve its quality?

No. Hreflang only describes alternate regional or language URLs. Each page still needs useful, indexable and properly localised content.

Should visitors be redirected automatically by language?

Avoid forcing redirects that remove choice. A visible selector and a non-blocking suggestion are usually safer for people and crawlers.
